If you’re here reading this, you’ve likely been affected by childhood cancer in some way. Maybe you’re a cancer survivor, a parent, a friend, a family member. Perhaps you just have a big heart for pediatric cancer patients! Regardless, if you’re reading this, we know it means you want to help somehow. You want to learn to listen better, love, and support these kids and their families.
While you may know someone affected by childhood cancer that you can directly impact, that’s not always the case. The good news is that you don’t have to personally know a child with cancer to help!
Here are a few ways to make an impact, even if you don’t have a personal connection to kids battling cancer.
Many organizations, such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, are dedicated to funding research and supporting children with cancer. For our part, Cancer Kickers provides personalized care kits to offer pediatric cancer patients a sense of hope, courage, and community. Donating to these charities can directly impact the lives of kids with cancer as they work to address their needs.
Many hospitals and cancer support organizations welcome volunteers. You can help with fundraising events, spend time with the children, or offer your skills, such as tutoring, art, or music, to brighten their days. Simply contact local charity branches or children’s hospitals to see how you can get involved.
Sharing information about childhood cancer on social media or through community events can help raise awareness about the challenges these children and their families face. Education can lead to increased support and funding for research. Some people would criticize a social media campaign as “slacktivism,” but education can touch hearts with the reality so many people face. That awareness then leads to action. It doesn’t hurt anyone to share inspiring stories and valuable information!
Participate in or organize fundraising events, such as charity runs, bake sales, or auctions, to raise funds for childhood cancer research and support programs. Our Big Buffalo 50 marathon is one way we raise money. We also have soccer teams that compete for fundraising and awareness. Think about your unique talents and community – we know there’s a way you can contribute!
Many children with cancer require blood and platelet transfusions during their treatment. Donating blood or platelets can be a lifesaving contribution. If you haven’t made a regular point to donate, please consider it. This simple act saves the lives of cancer patients and others in dire health crises. All it takes is a little bit of your time.
Many children with cancer spend extended periods in the hospital. Sending care packages with toys, books, or comforting items can brighten their stay and provide comfort. Ask your local hospital if they have a program you can participate in. Pool resources with your friends, faith community, or office to fill these care packages.
Some children with cancers like leukemia require bone marrow transplants. Registering as a bone marrow donor can potentially save a child’s life! You can register as a donor with Be the Match. Beyond donating marrow, consider being a traditional organ donor. You never know how this final act of kindness can save lives.
Contact your elected representatives to advocate for increased funding for childhood cancer research. Policies can substantially affect the resources available for finding cures and treatments. We hear all the time that pediatric cancer research is specifically underfunded. Let’s not take that statistic lying down!
Learn more about childhood cancer, its causes, treatments, and challenges. This knowledge can help you better understand the needs of these children and their families. So many people want to help but don’t know how. Seek clarity around this scary and daunting topic – it will help you see the real needs in the midst of it all.
Finally, contact your local children’s hospital to inquire about their needs. They may accept donations of toys, books, or other items that can make a hospital stay more comfortable. You don’t have to make a big toy or gift drive to make a difference. It may be as simple as picking up a stuffed animal here and there so you can make one big donation at the end of the year!
Remember, every small effort counts, and collectively, these actions can profoundly impact the lives of children with cancer and their families. You won’t cure cancer alone. But our efforts together bring light, life, and hope for a cure!
