Hope in Numbers: The Progress Behind Childhood Cancer Research

Fifty years ago, a childhood cancer diagnosis carried seemingly impossible odds. Today, those odds look different in the best way. It happened because researchers, families, and advocates refused to let “impossible” get the last word.

The 1970s: Where the Numbers Started

In the mid-70s, the five-year survival rate for all pediatric cancers combined ranged from 58 to 63 percent. By 2021, that number climbed to 87 percent. For some cancers, the change has been even more pronounced.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, saw its five-year survival rate rise from 57 percent in 1975 to an incredible 92.3 percent by 2020. A diagnosis that once spelled heartbreak for most families now comes with real hope and well-founded expectations of a cure.

2017: The Turning Point

One of the clearest turning points in pediatric cancer research came in 2017, when the FDA approved the first CAR T-cell therapy for children and young adults with relapsed leukemia.

Doctors can now take a child’s own immune cells and re-engineer them to recognize and attack cancer cells directly. For children whose leukemia returned again and again, this approach eliminated the cancer in most cases. Longer-term follow-up shows many have remained cancer-free in the years since.

It marked the first gene therapy ever approved in the United States, and it’s opened a door that researchers are still walking through as they explore how to bring similar tools to the fight against other types of childhood cancer.

Today: What the Numbers Show Now

The overall mortality rate for children and adolescents with cancer dropped by more than half between 1975 and 2022. That statistic represents thousands of kids who got to grow up, go to school, build careers, and start families of their own because research gave them the chance.

Progress hasn’t landed evenly across every diagnosis, though. Survival gains have unfortunately slowed in recent years, improving by about half a percent annually since 2000. Cancers like certain brain tumors and bone sarcomas haven’t seen the same dramatic improvement as leukemia and lymphoma.

Researchers point to the biology itself: these cancers are often more genetically diverse, harder to target, and harder to treat without causing lasting damage to growing bodies. Today’s research and clinical trials are headed there next, though, and networks like the Children’s Oncology Group connect young patients everywhere to the newest available treatments.

What’s Next?

The research community is leaning into precision medicine: mapping the genetic and molecular details of each child’s specific cancer so treatment can be tailored to each person. Immunotherapy continues to expand beyond leukemia and into new territory. Tools like liquid biopsies and AI-assisted diagnostics are speeding up how quickly doctors can identify cancer and match it to the right treatment plan.

It’s hard work, driven by the sustained investment in the labs and trials that do the slow, unglamorous work of testing what will truly help kids survive and thrive.

Things have only improved because there are determined people out there refusing to let cancer have the final say. Every child who’s grown past their diagnosis is proof that the work is paying off, and every ongoing trial is proof that the work is still happening here and now.

After all, percentages don’t change what your family is dealing with right now.

What we can tell you is that the ground has shifted enormously, and it keeps shifting for the better. Treatments that didn’t exist a decade ago are here now. Researchers are hard at work as you read this.

That doesn’t make it any less hard. But it does mean you’re not facing this in the same world your parents or their parents would have.
